A study at the University of Washington would make one think that this would be true. The pediatricians divided children with ear infections into two groups: one received a homeopathic remedy of German chamomile and windflower, the other a placebo. The kids receiving the homeopathic remedy had less ear pain and lower fevers when compared to the other group. As always, check with your doctor, or a naturopathic physician, before treating your children on your own.
Have you heard of "Network Chiropractic"?
In the past I've written about traditional chiropractic work and the positive effect this form of "physical manipulation" can have with some people complaining of a wide array of body structural problems. Network Chiropractic is quite different. With just the slightest amount of pressure with finger or thumb at various points along the body, the client will take what I call an "involuntary deep breath," almost like the body is breathing on its own. It is through these breaths that the spine will readjust itself to its normal position. I began a series of these adjustments six weeks ago through a practitioner in Gainesville, FL, Dr. Jeffrey Smith, and have found a great relief from upper back spasms that had not responded to other treatments. For more information, visit the Association for Network Care web site.
Where can we find the best information on treating any kind of allergy (food, pollen, etc.) alternatively?
One of the best sources is an organization called N.E.E.D.S. (Nutritional, Ecological & Environmental Delivery System). They offer books, supplements and products to help any and all allergy sufferers. Their toll-free number is 1-800-634-1380. Also, Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide and the array of individual books put out by Burton Goldberg would be of assistance.
Could you recommend any books on the spiritual art of Shamanism?
The study of shamanism has never been more popular than right now, with articles appearing in magazines on a monthly basis. Shapeshifting: Shamanic Techniques for Global and Personal Transformation by John M. Perkins, The Way of the Shaman by Michael J. Harner, and Journeying: Where Shamanism and Psychology Meet by Jeannette Gagan, Ph.D. are all respected books. Eve Bruce, M.D., a past guest on my show, leads tours through the Andes and Amazon exploring shamanistic teaching. Visit Dream Change Coalition or call 1-800-944-1001 for more information.
Are there any alternative healing web sites that you recommend?
A naturopathic physician I know told me about a new site recently that gives information combed from articles printed in alternative medicine journals. Go to the site listed below and search for the specific topic you are interested in. The National Institutes of Health created this site www.nccam.nih.gov. Click on CAM in PubMed.
Can you recommend alternative treatments for high blood pressure?
I always recommend that one see a naturopathic physician or holistic doctor prior to self medicating a known disease, so please begin here. Numerous studies from around the world have confirmed the effectiveness of garlic or garlic supplements (Garlicin and Kyolic are two excellent choices). Standardized hawthorne berry concentrate, flaxseed oil/capsules and Co-Q10 may all also play a role in lowering blood pressure. One study showed that taking 750 mg of magnesium daily resulted in a significant reduction in blood pressure. A pure, wholesome diet, exercise and removal of alcohol and nicotine are critical as well. A very significant study showed that the use of transcendental meditation lowered blood pressure as effectively as medication with no side effects.
Are there other personal outlets for journaling other than writing?
At a lecture I gave recently, a woman shared with our group how she uses her artistic abilities as a painter to create a journal of how she's feeling and what she's going through in life. From expressing challenges to intense joy, drawings or paintings can tell the story to one just as a written journal can to another. Art therapy has been used to help children access their deepest emotions when they were not able to formulate sentence structure or find the correct words to express how they were feeling. To find out more, visit www.survivorsartfoundation.org.
You've offered a variety of advice regarding alternative healing. Could you list the phone numbers for these organizations?
I'd love to! Here is a resource list of some of the many complementary healing organizations:
National Center for Homeopathy (877-624-0613) www.homeopathic.org
American Massage Therapy Association (847-864-0123) www.amtamassage.org
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (800-521-2262) www.medicalacupuncture.org
American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (206-298-0125) www.naturopathic.org
American Association of Oriental Medicine (610-266-1433) www.aaom.org
Do people who meditate really have lower medical costs?
According to a study at Maharishi University in Fairfield, Iowa, a study of the money the Canadian government spent on people who meditated regularly was 14% less than on those who did not meditate. This goes hand in hand with studies done in the U.S. that showed those individuals with high blood pressure who practice transcendental meditation had the same blood pressure lowering results as those on medication . . . but without the monthly costs and side effects. To learn how to use relaxation meditation techniques, listen to our audio No More Stress and read the book TM Transcendental Meditation by Robert Roth.
Do you know of any cruise lines that offer cruises from a spiritual perspective?
Yes. Crystal Cruises on cruise ships Crystal Harmony and Crystal Symphony is based on Feng Shui, which is the Asian "Art of Placement." The decor has been modified so that the "Chi" (energy) flows throughout the ship and therapy rooms by using Zen rock gardens, crystals, and mirrors to enhance the flow of Chi. For more information about these cruises, call 1-800-820-6663. Some great books to check out are The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Creating Balance, Harmony, and Prosperity in Your Environment by Terah Kathryn Collins, Designing Your Happiness: A Contemporary Look at Feng Shui, by Nancilee Wydra, and the video Feng Shui: Creating Environments for Success and Well-Being by Lin Yun.
You've mentioned recently a study regarding spiritually and health. Could you pass that on again?
I love this topic one of my favorites is a study at Duke University with 4,000 people. The exciting thing about this study was that it included not only people who pray but those who either prayed or meditated. The end result? Those who said they never or rarely prayed had a 50% greater risk of death during this study than those who meditated or prayed more than once a month. (Please do not forget to visit our web page weekly to say a prayer for someone who is listed there, yourself or an individual you care about. It can make a difference.)
Where can I find more information on the Gentle Wind Company you recently interviewed? This healing theory sounded interesting.
The interview with Mary Miller, co-founder of the Gentle Wind Project was extraordinary. A non-profit organization, their mission is to help people heal emotionally and physically through the use of their healing instruments. This is done at no charge, although donations are accepted. Mary shared success stories regarding recovering alcoholics, battered women, and their success with relationship issues. For a free pamphlet and information on the person who lives in your city that offers this healing option, call 1-800-545-7847 or go to www.gentlewindproject.org. This could be one more step in your own healing process. Be open to the many possibilitiees that are presented to you in life.
You had a healer on your show recently, a woman whose life was transformed in Texas and now she has discovered a gift to help people to heal, or to heal themselves. Has she written any book describing this process?
Clementine Marie Giovannetti wrote a very powerful and empowering account of her life's transformation entitled The Diary of A Healer: A Love Story (Part 1). Most of us have no idea of the power and love that resides within. Clementine found that love and now embraces it. If you've ever been at a place in your life where struggle and chaos seem the norm, this book is for you. If you know you are here to make a difference but have struggled with what direction to turn, this book will offer the hope you desire. A moving account of the search for love . . . for grace. To order call 1-800-431-1579.
I've never heard you discuss scented candles, yet you talk a lot about essential oils and the effect they have on our health. Can scented candles do the same thing?
The National Candle Association recommends that we use candles made from beeswax as they burn much cleaner than paraffin wax, which is made from a petroleum by-product. The emissions from paraffin candles has caused illness in laboratory tests on animals. Also, as we constantly recommend, make sure any oils or aeromatherapy candles contain only the pure essential oils (i.e., essential oils of lavender induces relaxation), which contain the healing ingredients found to be helpful in studies done on these scents. Probably the best place to find these types of candles would be health food or alternative book stores. Along with the essential oil scent, the act of lighting candles and shutting off all surrounding lights creates a sacred, relaxed space . . . a wonderful place for intimacy, too.
Can you please post the phone number to locate a therapist who is trained in EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was discovered by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., who has written an excellent book simply entitled EMDR. This technique has been heralded by therapists from around the world as a breakthrough therapy to help people recover from stress and anxiety due to trauma, sexual abuse, rape and the experiences of war. In a recent article, Dr. David Bresler from UCLA School of Medicine discussed the successes he was seeing with chronic pain patients who were able to reduce or stop using narcotics that had helped them deal with their condition. Sex therapist William Zangwill stated that he has seen an amazing number of men he treats for impotence, recover their sexual functioning with EMDR. A recent guest, Dr. Sandra Wilson, co-author of the book Through the Eyes of A Child, has personally experienced the healing power of this technique with children traumatized by war, sexual abuse and accidents from around the world. To find a therapist certified in EMDR, call 831-372-3900.
You've discussed the various affects of scent on our emotions, aromatherapy, but I've never heard you mention the affects of color. Any ideas here?
It does seem that aromatherapy receives a lot more press than "color therapy," but the colors we surround ourselves with can have an affect on our moods and energy levels. A number of years ago, a friend recommended that I replace my yellow comforter on my bed with a blue one to help me to relax at night. And it worked. According to the Pantone Color Institute, blue is definitely a relaxant color so it is highly appropriate for the bedroom. Even pay attention to the color of photos in your room if you have a hard time falling asleep. The opposite of blue would be yellow, an energizing color, perfect for the breakfast table. Purple is wonderful to use to enhance creativity, so consider this color for placement on your desk.
I've recently been diagnosed with Rosacea and wondered if there are any alternative treatments.
Rosacea, a skin problem that results in red, blotchy areas mainly on the face, is thought to be due to dialated capillaries that are close to the skin's surface. I have yet to actually read a definitive answer anywhere on what causes this condition, but as usual, stress and diet can play a role here. Meditation or deep relaxation techniques are very important, as well as eliminating nicotine, alcohol and spicy foods. Remove sugar and all milk related products for 60 days, as this one move alone has helped many of the symptoms of Rosacea disappear. Topically, Aloe Vera gel can be helpful, but apply it to a small area first (it can be an irritant with some people). Talk to your doctor about Vitamin A and the highest dose they would safely recommend. Evening Primrose Oil capsules (250-750mg, 3 times/day) may help as well. You have had a guest on your show several times talking about music therapy. Could you give me her name and how to purchase her music?
Our guest's name is Marcey Hamm and her music is available by calling 800-843-3240. She is quite an amazing individual. A near death experience due to an automobile accident in 1985 was the catalyst that brought her to create music that heals. People report sudden, almost miraculous, spontaneous feelings of well-being while listening to Marcey's tapes. Here is a list of some of her music:
Inward Harmony (enhances the healing process, both mental and physical)
Celestial Dance (enhances creativity, performance and productivity)
Anthem to the Soul (enchances the achievement of any goal from increasing propserity to athletic ability)
Dream Partner (enhances healthy and supportive relationships within ourselves and with others)
Maitreya (enhances inner peace and happiness)
Is there a certain strength that therapeutic magnets should be to be effective? Can any type of magnet heal the body?
According to Ted Zablotsky, M.D., President of BIOflex Medical Magnetics, "The minimum level of reduction is 5 gauss at the level of tissue pathology to be affected. Our magnets are designed to deliver this reduction up to approximately one inch from the surface of the magnet." His products have been used in studies at such prestigious schools as the Baylor College of Medicine with some fascinating results. Prior to purchasing magnets, check to see the strength of the product and any specific studies done using the brand you are looking at. The book "Magnet Therapy: The Pain Cure Alternative" by Rosch et al. has some interesting information as well. My past experiences of using these products for knee, neck and upper back discomfort has been nothing short of amazing. While there are no guarantees that these products will help everyone, I believe they are a valuable alternative healing tool.
A friend has been telling me about a science called Vaydic Medicine where you learn to eat and live healthfully according to your body type. Do you know of this? Is it safe?.
Ayur-vedic medicine originated, I believe, in India thousands of years ago and is now being reintroduced to the world through Maharishi Ayur-vedic Health Centers. This science has divided individuals into three distinct body types: Vatta, Pitta and Kapha, and describes the best overall eating plans and lifestyles for better health. We recently had a wonderful physician, Jay Glaser, M.D., on our show who has been working with this system and seeing fantastic results o ver the past 25 years. He is the director of their health center in Lancaster, Massachusetts. For more information on this call 1-800-290-6702. You can participate in health rejuvenation retreats at these centers, or find an Ayur-vedic practitioner near you through this phone number. Mind, Body, Spirit . . . it's all one.
You frequently discuss a condition called fibromyalgia. My sister has been diagnosed with this and we really do not know where to turn for information. Our doctor is very nice but is not aware of successful treatments. Any information would be appreciated.
Fibromyalgia is a very misunderstood condition, an auto-immune disease that involves pain throughout the body, many times beginning in the upper back and between the shoulder blades. There is one organization that has been a leader for the past twenty years working with people affected by this condition. The USA Fibromyalgia Association, PO Box 1483, Dublin, Ohio 43017 (614-675-1152). I am sure that they will be able to help. Also, check back issues of Alternative Medicine Digest (1-800-344-6677) or the "Bible for Alternative Medicine" Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide by Burton Goldberg.
I have a problem with back pain. My M.D. told me it was sciatica. He has suggested I see a chiropractor. What I would like to know is how long should this type of thing take before I get some relief and what other treatment is there for sciatica?
Sciatica, a sometimes searing, sometimes throbbing pain that can radiate from the lower back down the leg and even affect our feet, is one of the most successfully treated conditions by chiropractic care. A consistent 6-12 visits usually is needed for relief, although it has taken some people longer before they see a major change. Also, consider a heel lift (from your drug store) in the shoe of the leg in pain. Acupuncture (up to 10 visits), and beginner's Yoga (listen to your body, if it causes discomfort release the movement) have all been used very successfully in the treatment of sciatica.
Where can I get more information on Feng Shui?
Feng Shui, the "Art of Placement" is such a great tool to use to help you find balance with regard to your health, relationships, career and financial issues. Feng Shui has proven that the position of your desk and lamp in your office can increase productivity, the position of your bed in your bedroom can enhance sleep and many other life changing qualities that can enhance our existence. Nancilee Wydra, President of Feng Shui Institute of America has produced audios and books on this topic. Call 561-589-9900.
You recently had a caller on your show who sounded like a blueprint of me. Always tired, can sleep all day, overweight and on antidepressants. Can you help?
A medical writer/expert from Illinois recently sent me some information regarding these symptoms that you might find interesting. She stated that the first thing someone experiencing these feelings should do is to get a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and a T4 (Thyroxine) test to see if you might be hypothyroid. Also, if you are on more than one type of medication for any condition, check with your doctor to make sure they are not negatively interacting with each other. This happens all the time and usually can be remedied quite easily. A good resource for more information is the Wilson's Syndrome Foundation (800-621-7006) and Dr. Sidney Wolf's book Worst Pills Best Pills II. But also do a true and honest evaluation of your lifestyle as well — how you handle stress, what and when you eat, and your exercise routine. The answer may lie in the balance of all of these points.
Could you provide information on treating a child with autism?
There are several organizations with what I consider leading edge approaches to many mental/physical conditions such as autism, mental retardation, Down's Syndrome: The Option Institute (800-71Happy) -- ask about the book Son Rise; The Handle Institute (206-860-2665); the magazine "Alternative Medicine Digest" has also run success stories on the treatment of these conditions -- Issue #19 1998 has an article on autism (800-366-4477).
I've just started to meditate and cannot believe how much better I feel. I heard you talk about the benefits of this form of relaxation but did not think that it was for me. What a mistake! A friend of mine uses a meditation pillow and thinks I would benefit from one but I can't find any at our local stores.
In our culture, meditation has been viewed as something for "other" people. Thank goodness that attitude is changing. A meditation pillow or cushion can help us in keeping the spine in proper alignment during our session. Check with your local Yoga studios or health food stores. For more information on meditation and relaxation techniques, try our audio No More Stress or read the books Transcendental Meditation by Robert Roth or The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, M.D.
You had a doctor on your show talking about using magnetic therapy on dogs. Was he kidding? I have a nine year old Huskie with arthritis. Would this be the answer vs. medication?
As amazing to some as it may seem, alternative therapy for pets is growing by leaps and bounds, barks and meows (ok, bad joke . . . anyway . . .) A veterinarian had called the show to discuss the success he has had with arthritis in dogs by treating them with magnets as well as acupuncture. I've heard from several others who have been successful with vitamin and herbal therapy as well as chiropractic care. To find out more, contact the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, 2214 Old Emmorton Road, Bel Air, MD 21015 (fax 410-569-2346). An excellent web site full of alternative veterinary medical information is www.altvetmed.com. Stay open minded to the potential of healing techniques for your pets, as well as yourself.
I was wondering what your opinion is regarding the value of Massage Therapy in dealing with stress.
Along with exercise and meditation, massage therapy can be an excellent aid in reducing stress. While some look at this as a frivolous pampering technique, studies have now proven its effectiveness in actually changing our physiology, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, releasing the "feel good" endophins, and enhancing immune system functioning. A past guest, Dr. Tiffany Field, Director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, is one of the current leaders proving the link between massage and healing for the general population, as well as those battling AIDS, and for enhancing the health of babies born prematurely.
