Introduction
Catherine Calloway was born in the center aisle
of an airplane about one mile high in the bright
blue sky. This was the beginning of the life of
a little girl who refused to do things the
normal “expected” way.
Right before this unforgettable incident on the
plane Catherine's mother said, “Goodness
gracious and my oh my! I never thought my baby
would be born in the sky.” After the birth the
doctor who fortunately happened to be on the
flight said, “that was a first.” It was
definitely a first for Catherine's mother too.
She looked down at her new daughter and said,
“you started different instead of the same,
we'll just have to put 'the first' after your
name.”
That
is how this remarkable girl became Catherine
Calloway, The First. Her friends simply called
her Cat. Cat lived a life filled with amazing
opportunities, and she took each one to heart.
Cat believed in herself. She believed everyone
was put here to make a difference in the world,
using whatever special talents they had been
given. Cat knew she was extraordinary, and she
helped others believe they were special too.
That was one of Cat's greatest gifts. If you
asked her today, she would probably blush and
say, “well everybody . . . that boy there, or
that girl over there . . . has some special
gift. I guess the difference might be that when
I was a little girl, I was told I was special
and I believed it. Some people just take longer
to start believing in themselves.”
Don't think for a moment that just because Cat
knew she was special, and that she was here to
make a difference, that her life didn't have
lots of ups and downs. Cat just happened to see
the beauty in both the highs and the lows. On a
rainy day or a sunny day, hot weather or chilly
cold . . . Cat could always find something to
love and appreciate.
Editorial Reviews
Writer's Digest
powerful critique of Cat:
"This great little book's main message is to
believe in yourself and to help others gain
confidence in this belief. What makes Cat
different? She was taught from a young age that
she was special and that this gift should be
shared with others. The message here is very
clear, that a dearly loved child is able to
share love. This book should be a required
manual for all parents who are expecting a
child. Being loved and thought special gives a
child that solid foundation they need to prosper
in a sometimes harsh world. Cat shares her
strength with a new girl in school and, in so
doing, discovers that this girl is also special
and is an exceptionally talented artist. This is
a well-written book with great illustrations
that add dimension to the story. The reading
level is also very age appropriate for the
early-reader audience. I think this book is very
commercially viable especially in the
educational marketplace."
"David Essel is a genius at awakening your
genius with a story. This book is written in the
spirit of the Hans Christian Anderson stories
and destined to become a classic." — Mark Victor
Hansen, co-author, #1 New York Times Best
Selling Chicken Soup Series
"Inspiring. High-energy messages for our
precious children." — Wayne W. Dyer, author of
Wisdom of the Ages
"A feel good story giving life, humor, and value
to childhood's most important lessons: empathy,
compassion, self-confidence and connection. We
need a whole series of books like this!" — Kenny
& Julia Loggins, songwriter and authors of The
Unimaginable Life
"My third grade daughter, who happens to be a very reluctant reader and never gets beyond the first few pages of a book before she deems it boring, just devoured your book today! It was the first time she has read a book from cover to cover in one sitting this school year. Not to mention she could tell me in complete detail the whole story line. This was a great success for her and I just wanted to thank you for such a great story. I have always prayed that one day she would find an author with a series of books that would turn her on to reading. I think she has found that in your book. Please let us know when more in your series are available. Thanks again for writing such a wonderful book!"- A Thankful Mom, Bonita Springs, FL
"David Essel does what few authors can do . . .
inject our hearts with a spirit and passion to
become better people. The Real Life Adventures
of Catherine "Cat" Calloway, The First is a must
read for all families and school systems across
the USA!" — Pat Croce, President, Philadelphia
76ers and author of I Feel Great!
"The book has an important message for students
of today. The values of acceptance, caring, and
giving of one's own time to bring out the
inherent talents and gifts of others were
evident in the book. Your message to the
students that they are all special, and the
importance to believe in yourself had an impact
on them." — Sr. Catherine Laboure, Principal,
St. Rose of Lima School, Syracuse, New York
"A delightful and very important book. The
lesson David so wisely delivers has the power
and magic to change children's lives and our
world into a better place." — Barbara Harris,
Editor in Chief, Shape Magazine
"This is a children's book that can make a
difference — one child at a time — by teaching
the importance of reaching out to people.
Everyone has a special talent. Many times in
helping people discover theirs, we get closer to
discovering ours. David Essel has written a book
that can inspire a whole generation of children
the value of respecting the uniqueness in each
other." — Kathy Smith, Fitness Expert, Author
"This is just a fabulous book about being the
new kid on the block. I just recently used it as
a lead-in to reading Jerry Spinelli's book
Stargirl. I recommend not only your book but
Spineli's as well. Both books proved to be very
effective in an advanced fifth grade reading
group. Thank you for your insights." — Barbara
